Sunshine Coast Grammar School Honoured at Annual Sports Awards

We are thrilled to announce that our Pool Lifesaving Team and coaches, as well as current and past students, have been recognised for their dedication and passion for their chosen sport at the annual Sunshine Coast Sports Awards.

For the second consecutive year, Year 12 student Grace Brimelow was awarded the Next Gen Athlete of the Year. Grace is Australia’s youngest ever paratriathlete to compete at the Paralympic Games. Her selection was a highlight for our Grammar School community as a whole. Throughout 2024, Grace also claimed gold in three world series Open Women’s Para-Triathlon events – Devonport and Stockton in Australia and Vigo in Spain.

Year 10 student Addison Houslip and past student Byron Dieckmann (Class of 2024) were also recognised as finalists in this elite category.

Addison is a multi-talented athlete, and in 2024 was selected for the Australian Triathlon Target Talent Program, Australian Cycling Development Academy and Australian Athletics Target Talent Program. In Triathlon, Addison won gold at the School Sport Australia Championships for the third year in a row. Amongst her other achievements, Addison won the National 3000m track championships and represented Queensland in cross country at the National Championships.

In 2024, Byron earned selection in two Australian Paddle Teams, competing for Paddle Australia in Bulgaria at the Junior World Championships for canoe/kayak, where he achieved 13th in the K2 1000m and 12th in the K1 x 2 5000m. Byron also competed for Paddle Australia in Canberra at the Asia Pacific Cup, achieving bronze in the K1 1000 and silver in the K4 500m. In Surf Lifesaving, Byron captained World Champions Maroochydore in the Youth Inter-Club World Championships, winning silver in the ski final.

Head Coach of our Pool Lifesaving Club and Year 4 teacher, Mrs Jeannie Baxter-Reid was nominated as a finalist in the Coach of the Year awards.

For the third consecutive year, Grammar Pool Lifesaving Club has been nominated as a finalist in the Team of the Year awards and this year, the Club was awarded the overall winner for the second time. The Club has defended its National Championship title for five consecutive years (2020 – 2025), with 11 athletes competing at the recent World Lifesaving Championships in Italy and the Commonwealth Championships in Canada.

The Annual Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of athletes and teams, officials, coaches, volunteers, administrators, and clubs and associations from grassroots to high performance. Sport at Grammar is about ensuring that we develop outstanding young people who understand that success is about participation, discipline and commitment. We are so proud of our inspiring athletes and their dedication to their chosen sports. Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and commitment.
