In 2003, C-J Jones and her family generously donated a trophy in memory of their family friend, Tonderai Mutwira who was tragically murdered during a farm invasion in Zimbabwe while advocating for justice. Tonderai’s legacy continues to inspire our community and we are proud to continue our annual Tonderai Public Speaking Competition for the 22nd year.
Each year, this event provides our secondary school students a platform to explore the significance of peace, harmony and justice in today’s world. Each year, the competition encourages students to reflect on their own responsibilities and how they can contribute to making the world a better place.
This year, we heard from nine passionate students who delivered thoughtful and impactful speeches on critical issues, including environmental sustainability, gender inequality, teen health, anxiety and societal beauty standards.
Congratulations to this year’s Senior Champion, Lila C (Year 10) for her moving speech on forced labour camps and to the Junior Champion Brydee R (Year 9) for her poem celebrating our environment.
Well done to all students for continuing to uphold Tonderai’s legacy. It is inspiring to witness our students confidently stand up and advocate for causes with passion and purpose. Their speeches reflect a deep sense of social awareness and responsibility and demonstrate their commitment to being active voices for change in our society.
