Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby once again demonstrated dominance in this year’s prestigious Sunshine Coast Secondary School Rugby Union competition, with all five teams securing a place in the Division One Grand Finals held on Wednesday evening.
The competition was marked by outstanding performances from each team, with three teams securing victory, highlighting the depth of talent and strong mentorship within the Rugby Program.
The U13 team showcased resilience and skill throughout the match against St Johns College, Nambour, and unfortunately fell short of claiming the John Edwards Shield for the second consecutive year.
Although the U14 team faced defeat against a strong St Johns College team, their cohesive teamwork and spirited play were impressive to watch.
The U15 team defeated St Teresa’s Catholic College, Noosaville convincingly to win the Bev Hall Shield for the second consecutive year, 62-5. The team’s victory is a testament to their hard work and commitment throughout the season.
The Second XV team executed their game plan with clear precision and sealed the win against Siena Catholic College 14-5 to claim the Jim Lucey Shield for the third consecutive year.
The First XV defeated St Johns College, Nambour in a nail-biting match 26-20 to win the Garth Hunt Shield for the seventh consecutive year.
The School’s First XV has now won the Premiership 12 times in the last 13 years, more than any other school in the competition’s history, which dates back to 1988.
Mr Troy Atkins, Head of Grammar Rugby Academy expressed his pride in the School’s achievements.
“Our players and coaches have shown remarkable commitment and sportsmanship throughout the season. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the legacy they are building on for Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby.”
For many senior students, this Grand Final was their last school game, making these victories a fitting and memorable send-off, and a lasting legacy that will inspire our younger players.
With a strong performance in 2024, Sunshine Coast Grammar Rugby is set to continue its tradition of excellence in the years to come.
“The success is not just about winning trophies, it reflects the values of teamwork, perseverance and leadership that the Rugby Program instils in all students,” said Mr Atkins.
