Sunshine Coast Grammar Swimming Club had 11 athletes compete against the nation’s best open water swimmers at the Australian Open Water Championships in Busselton from 24 – 27 January, with four athletes reaching the podium and two claiming National Titles.
The Club finished strongly against hundreds of elite swimmers from across the country, placing fourth overall in the club point score.
Sunshine Coast Grammar School students, Daisy Quinn claimed the National Title for the 5km and 7.5km and Cerys Davis won the 5km in their respective age groups. The win comes off the back of a successful competition for Daisy last year, where she also won Gold in the 5km and 7.5km events.
The accolades continued at the Championships with Grammar student, Jake Hammond’s performance propelling him to the top of the pack, claiming the Bronze medal in the 16-Year Boys 7.5km race.
Sunshine Coast Grammar Club Swimmer, Katie Irwin also performed strongly, claiming the Bronze medal in the competitive Women’s Open 10km race.
At the helm of the Club’s success is Head Coach Luke Stafford, who has been instrumental in the Club’s rise to prominence since its inaugural season in 2017/2018 and he has expressed his enthusiasm for the growing discipline of open-water swimming.
“Since the inclusion of the 10km event at the Olympics, it has become an event that appeals to more swimmers,” said Luke.
Sunshine Coast Grammar Swimming Club takes immense pride in the accomplishments of its athletes and coaches and is confident they will continue to shine on the national stage in the lead-up to the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympics Games.
“Our athlete’s discipline and passion are the driving force behind the Club’s achievements, with many training up to 25 hours per week in the pool and the gym. It is a huge responsibility made easier with the support and guidance of the Club’s dedicated coaching staff,” said Luke.
